🇪🇺 TEEN European Digital Community: Aspen Root System from Cherkasy, Ukraine

Aspen Root System

Hello! I’m a theatre enthusiast and cultural explorer originally from Zaporizhzhya, Ukraine. My journey into the arts began not with a traditional script, but with a Forum Theatre workshop focused on personal boundaries. That experience transformed how I see the stage — not just as a place for performance, but as a laboratory for life and a tool for social change. I’m inspired by the idea of the “spect-actor” and by collective storytelling as a practice of empathy, dialogue, and empowerment. I’m here to connect with others who see art as a bridge between people and communities.

The soil / the need

Growing up in an industrial city, I was looking for practical and emotional tools to navigate daily life and social interactions. I needed a safe space where I could practice being brave, learn how to stand up for myself, and communicate clearly — without the real-world consequences of making mistakes.

The first seed

A theatre workshop / lab.

Tell us about that first spark

The true spark happened in Zaporizhzhya during a Forum Theatre workshop about personal boundaries. A scene was being played where someone’s boundaries were crossed, and it felt painfully real. Then the facilitator said we could shout “STOP!” and step into the scene to try a different solution. When I saw a peer walk onto the stage and change the outcome, something clicked. I realized theatre was not only performance — it was a rehearsal for life, a place where we could rewrite our stories. That sense of empowerment made me fall in love with it.

Roots (people & experiences that shaped your path)

My roots are in the Zaporizhzhya theatre community — especially facilitators and activists who showed me that theatre can be a tool for dialogue. The experience of sitting in a circle and sharing personal struggles around boundaries created a deep root of empathy. Those shared stories and the courage of the people who told them are the foundation of everything I do now.

The trunk (what keeps you in theatre)

What keeps me connected is the pursuit of truth and the power of the “spect-actor” — the reminder that we are not just watching life, but participating in it. In an overwhelming world, theatre keeps me active rather than passive. It reminds me that I have agency: I can intervene, change the rhythm of a conversation, and support others in doing the same.

Branches (future / desire)

I see theatre as a bridge between personal growth and community. In the coming years, I hope it gives me even more confidence to explore difficult social questions and help others define their boundaries, just as I did in my first workshop. I want to branch out into projects that use art not only for entertainment, but for healing and strengthening the ecosystem of the places where I live.

If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be? Why?

An aspen. On the surface, aspens seem like individual trees, but underground they share a massive root system. I relate to that: personal boundaries matter, but we are strongest when we recognize our deep connection to one another. If one of us shakes, we all feel the wind.
