Tamarack of Theatre Magic
Hi! I’m Meredith from Edmonton, Canada. I love making things: puppets, Halloween costumes, theatre props, and more. I’m currently a theatre production student at MacEwan University. A few years ago I made a giant snake puppet for a musical, and last year I directed and designed a play where three step ladders represented mountains, a lighthouse, a tree, and a home. I also love creative writing, poetry — and birds. I love making magic happen.
The soil / the need
I wanted to understand how the magic happens. I came to theatre because I wanted to figure out the inner workings, and getting to talk to and work with technicians and other artists made me even more excited about what theatre can do.
The first seed
A teacher / school.
Tell us about that first spark
I’ve been watching and participating in theatre since I was very small, so the interest was always there. But in high school, I found a community in my theatre classes — and that turned interest into passion.
Roots (people & experiences that shaped your path)
The support of my technical theatre teacher in high school, along with the genuine interest of my friends and family, made theatre feel like a real possibility for me.
The trunk (what keeps you in theatre)
The joy of working on projects and connecting with other artists keeps me here. The more I work, the more possibilities I see — and the more things I want to try.
Branches (future / desire)
In the next few years, I hope to continue building props and costumes and maybe direct a play in my community. I don’t know exactly what I’ll be doing, but I know theatre will keep bringing me closer to brilliant creators I can learn from and share with.
If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be? Why?
A tamarack. It looks like an evergreen, but in autumn it turns yellow and loses its needles — surprising, hard to classify, a little difficult to pin down. I relate to that.
