Weeping Willow of Freedom

Hey, I’m Esther, 23 years old and currently studying in Cologne. Theatre is a place where I can be who I want to be — travel in time, build a character, and gain distance from my own personality while discovering new perspectives on life and myself. I love creative and slightly “crazy” things: trying new activities, travelling, and meeting new people. I’m interested in psychology, biology/nature, music, languages, dance, and the art of words — from poetry slam to comedy and song.

The soil / the need

My first theatre group in school gave me a feeling of freedom. I loved the idea of “try it out — there is no wrong or right.” I loved being listened to and having the chance to contribute my own ideas and creativity. It felt like I no longer had to please anyone.

The first seed

A teacher / school.

Tell us about that first spark

My second theatre group became like a family to me. We were ages 13–25, and in that space age and origin didn’t matter. After standing on stage together in front of hundreds of people, I felt a deep connection with everyone.

Roots (people & experiences that shaped your path)

When I moved to Cologne, I searched for a new group because I missed that feeling of creating something together. The process, the connection, and the freedom had marked me deeply. I wanted to experience that again and also escape daily routine for a few hours.

The trunk (what keeps you in theatre)

What keeps me connected is the feeling of freedom and deep collective creation. Theatre makes me feel fully alive.

Branches (future / desire)

I believe theatre will always remain my passion, independent of my future job. It helps me through hard times, and after my studies I want to do more workshops and expand my theatre skills — maybe even take a break from routine life for a while to focus on that.

If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be? Why?

A weeping willow. Its roots go far, just like my interests and important experiences. It loves sunny places near water, just like I do. It is also linked to romance in poetry, and I love that atmosphere.
